A blogger, Joey Chong, wrote up a piece about her experience with getting her first hard gel extensions. She says that the entire experience took quite a long time, over 4 hours, from manicure to pedicure, to gel extensions. This is a little longer than i would have expected to hear, but in a busy place it may be unavoidable.
Joey has put up quite a few pictures of her experience which are great, and you should check them out. The article then goes on to explain the pros and cons of gel nail extensions, and in what situations someone may want to go with a regular gel overlay rather than an extension.
One Thing that really caught my attention was a way that her nail salon may improve by upgrading their nail equipment.
The substance only hardens under UV light. After applying a layer of hard gel over my natural nails, I have to insert my fingers into the UV light machine. I can feel the heat and to be honest, it can hurt.
The things we endure for beauty… there are plenty of UV lights with cooling fans attached that i think can offer at least a mild comfort while your gel extensions are hardening. What do you think? Do you use cooled uv gel lamps with your services? What ways do you try to make the experience as positive as possible for your clients?

Have any advice for a salon trying to keep up with social media, is it worth it?
I think using social media can be good if its used with a direction and purpose in mind. What are your goals with social media? Do you just want to be “out there” and facebooking and tweeting, because thats the new thing? or are you looking to build a relationship with your client base? brand an image? build a larger client base?
When it comes to salons especially, there is a lot that you can do that will help you get value from social media. Using facebook to give out newcomer coupons or random spa raffles etc. are some ideas to implement, but keep in mind what your end goal is. I assume it would be to increase the number of customers and the frequency of their visits, but that may not be your goal, i don’t know. to do that, you can think of facebook as your potential customer list. you will then want to grow your facebook page followers and get them to come have fun in the spa. you could give a first timer coupon to everyone who adds you in facebook, and then have raffles or something like that to keep people engaged. (by the way, facebook, twitter, and y outube all have “followers in the same way, so pick which works for you)
Providing advice and educational tidbits is social media gold, because in the end, you really want to be serving peoples needs and wants. The more you can give away online, the more you will receive. I saw that you are displaying and showing off your salon which is great, and by talking on camera, you let people get to know you and who you are, but to add to that, you want to get people to view you as the place to go for salon and spa services, show off some of your experts that work at the spa and have them teach some beauty techniques,
Ive got a lot more to say on this subject if you’re interested, but i haven’t had my coffee yet, so I’ll leave you there. good luck and have fun!
