There is an interesting conversation about how much money a nail technician should make over at Yahoo Answers

This is generally a subject of much debate among nail technicians, hair dressers, and massage therapists alike.  Some think you should go with 10% standard, others go with a 4 or 5 dollar gratuity.  I have seen a few comments advocating 25% minimum if you want good repeat service on the fabulous manicure you received from your hardworking nail tech.

This one really caught my attention.

Usually nothing. Those you name should charge honest prices, and not expect to be supplemented. Hurrah for Japan where they are paid fairly and refuse to take tips.

Honestly i think tipping is a useless thing to worry about.  If you are a nail technician, you want to make sure that your nail art, your nail fill, or your new set of nails is the best that you have ever done, and if you get a mediocre or fabulous tip wont matter, because you will have a customer for life.  If you are a customer, make sure to appreciate your nail tech for what you think she is worth.  If you are a good and courteous client, she will take good care of you, move her schedule and really try and keep you happy.
