Are you interested in becoming a nail technician or nail artist? Then you have come to the write place. Lets look at why you should take nail technician courses so you can become a licensed professional in nail art.

Do what you Love

First off, as with any career move, you need to ask yourself some questions, more specifically you need to ask yourself if you like what you’ll be doing. Do you like nails?’ Would you consider yourself an artistic person? Do you enjoy fashion? are you good with your hands?

Do you like meeting new people? If you answered yes to these questions, then you will probably love being a Nail Tech.

Make Some Money Too

Also when looking at a career move, you probably want to know whether you will make good money. nail technician Courses can be great for people looking to start a new and lucrative career. Many Nail Technicians have reported making a thousand dollars a week right after starting, and some courses are as short as 16 hours long. But don’t take my word for it, just browse around yahoo answers with Nail Technician or nail technician courses to see for yourself. Whether you are doing fake nails, like acrylics, or all natural nails, you can charge anywhere from 50 dollars and up depending on your skill and reputation.

Types of Nail Technicians

Another question we have to ask is where are

you going to be working? Do you want to open your own salon? Do you want to work for a salon near you? Or do you want to work as a mobile nail technician and do nail art in people’s homes? To keep things as simple as possible we are going to assume that you will be working in a nail salon or a general beauty salon, or are planning on being a mobile nail tech.

Find your Fashionista Guru

The best place to start to find nail technician courses is at the salon you are planning on working at, ask them if they have a class that they send new girls to or if there is a training course through the salon itself. If they don’t, you can ask one of the nail techs themselves or you can head down to your local community college. They will usually have a course that you can take to get started.

How much do nail technician courses cost?

The cost for nail technician courses will be different where ever you go and whatever you are studying. But you need to make sure that you become a licensed cosmetologist and pass all of your sanitation requirements. You don’t want to start your

new career with fines do you? Decide on learning a few skills as a newbie. If you are going to do fake nails, then learn gel nails first as they are probably the easiest, then move on to acrylic nails as they are probably the most popular, then you will have a great feel for what you like and is good for your career.

Natural Nails for those with sensitive Noses

If you don’t like breathing a lot of chemicals and hate the smell, then i would suggest learning as much as you can about natural nails, because you won’t have to use half of the noxious chemicals you would for acrylics. check out OPI (a nail polish brand) cause they have some really great products and also courses in different regions.

In Summary

Make sure you like nails, make sure the income is what you’re expecting, find out where you would enjoy working and how, ask around for what the best nail training or courses in your area may be, and find out how much it will cost. I wish you luck in all your beautiful endeavors. Till next time

I just graduated from High School and i wanna become a nail technician.. perferrable self imployed.
i have a 1 year old son.
and i live in Phoenix Arizona.

What are some good schools?
How do I get started?
What is the tuition normally?
I would like something not so expensive and short… if possible.

Best answer:

Answer by Laura in North Carolina
Check at your community college first. Since you have a child, you should be able to get finanical aid. If your community college doesn’t offer it, then look into private vocational schools. The prices will vary by school.

Around here the private schools cost about 00 for an 8 week course to be a nail tech.

Remember that “cheap and quick” might not be the best. Once you start your career as a nail tech, you will want to have the best education behind you.

There are many reasons that people will choose to take nail technician courses and become nail technicians. For me it was an opportunity to provide more for my family and my children then i could with the education that i had received. I knew college wasn’t for me and working in retail was not providing the income that i desired. I looked at many different trade schools, and had a few friends who were going to be hair dressers. I think the main reason that i decided to go get licensed and get a nail technician job was because i wanted to be a little bit different than my friends in what they were doing and I knew that i wanted to do something working with my hands.

Your decision may be different, or you may not have made a decision about whether you want to be a nail technician or not yet. I have given you my reasons, so now i am going to lay out a few of the pros and cons of becoming a nail technician so you can decide for yourself whether you want to pursue the career.

I will start off with a few of the “pros” as i see them. As a nail technician, you have the ability to work for yourself. With a specialized skill like nails, you can work for any salon you want, you can rent space in a salon, or if you can afford the start up cost you can even create nail technician jobs for others by having your own salon. I have seen a rising trend in concierge or mobile nail techs. These mobile nail technicians may not even have a salon, they can work from anywhere because they will pack a mobile nail studio into their car. With a portable nail table, a lamp and their tools, they are on the go and on to various clients homes to pamper them with fabulous nail service in style.

Another positive result of being a nail technician is that you can set your own rates and really control your future career. Being a licensed nail tech gives you the ability to reach and stretch your own limits outside of what some other job would limit you with. If you want to do different types of nails, you have the freedom to go get more training or practice on your own. You get to choose what to charge your clients, and how you want to get more clients as well. Nail tech’s set their own hours and really do as they please when it comes to growing their career.

Now on the flip side, getting your nail technician license is a lot of work in most places. In certain parts of Europe, you may be able to take fewer classes, or have a greater flexibility with where you learn than in the US. In the United states, you are regulated by your state’s board of cosmetology… usually. Most states have a minimum of 300 class hours, with many more being in the 1200 hr range. You will have to study nail anatomy and learn quite a bit about sanitation, chemical safety, and hygine on top of your regular nail art and nail treatment training. This is hard work, but you know what they say, anything worth doing always is.

Now another thing that you may see as a negative is that being a nail technician means you have to have a certain amount of self discipline. I outlined all the freedom’s that you have above, which are really great, but if you really want to succeed as a nail technician, you are going to have to grow constantly and learn how to manage clients, manage your time, and manage your books. These things will all take alot of work, but before you know it could be old hat if you focus at it.

Now there are quite a few other things to keep in mind, like working with different people every day could be exciting or maybe stressful. if you have clients that like to talk, that may be your favorite thing, or you may just want them to be quite for just a bit. Maybe you don’t like working with chemicals, or hate the smell of acrylic nails and the like. I didn’t really cover these because you can solve these issues relatively easily, change the environment of your salon to encourage quite or talking, work with only natural nails if you don’t like the chemicals.

Now I hope that you can see the various pros and cons of becoming licensed nail technician and getting a nail technician job. I have had a great career as a nail tech, but that’s because it has worked for me. You will only know what works for you after trying things out.

One of the most important habits i think a nail technician can develop is also one of the most basics, and may be over looked in many nail technician schools. The tip is this:

Always make sure to collect the name phone number and email address of every client you see. As nail technicians, we want to file this information in our appointment books, smart phones, email programs, or even an email management system if your business warrents it.

You want to make sure that you email your customers on a weekly basis about specials that you offer, new products, or new services either weekly or monthly. Your goal every week is to find a reason to mail them. If you are going to give a discount on your uv gel nail sets, then you can send them a coupon, or you can just have them mention the offer that you send out when they come in to get your discount.

If you get in some new seasonal colors or are trying out a new brand of nail polish, its a great reason to send a short note to your list of clients, and if you have a client who has been waiting for a particular color, let them know you got their nail polish in. They will appreciate the personal touch from their nail technician. Good personal news about your nail business is also great to send out, it lets your clients get to know you better, and we always feel more comfortable and want to be around someone we know better. hint hint, keep your nail clients coming back hint .

You can also call a client that doesnt already have another manicure or pedicure scheduled. give them a call and a friendly reminder about a special that you are giving to your clients and that if she wants to schedule an appointment to get her nails filled, or whatever service you may be focusing on, you will give her a percentage discount off of your regular prices. You can even call about a new nail technician course you may have taken, and you really want them to benefit from your new techniques.

These emails and calls are important for you to grow your nail tech business. Every call you make and every email you write is an opportunity to keep you on your clients mind which can be great for repeat visits to your nail salon, or great for referrals and new clients who would love to benefit from the nail training you have received.

Something a little more interesting in the way of acrylic nail fashions are bubble nails. These new nails have a very different look, and seem to be getting quite a few mixed reviews. Check out bubble nails here and come back to let us know what you think.

Finally today, here is a recent post on how to care for your nails after you have removed your acrylics. The post goes into a few different ways to care for your nails best and how to remove them in the first place.

We have mentioned many times before that nail training is incredibly important for increasing your income as a nail technician, and absolutely necessary for newbies looking to get licensed through their nail technician courses. One question that i see asked a lot is “are nail technician courses worth it?” and that is what i would like to answer with this post.

The Cost of your Nail Training

The cost of getting your nail technician license will change from country to country and state to state. If you are in the united states, you will first want to check out the website of your local board of cosmetology. They will have requirements on the hours of training necessary for you to take the nail tech exam. You will also want to check with them about the cost of the nail exam and what equipment will be necessary and whether you must bring your own or not. Once you know how much schooling you need you will be better prepared when approaching the various nail schools in your area.

I would suggest calling three nail schools in your area. You can find them online, through the phone book, or by contacting your local nail or beauty salon and asking where their nail techs were trained. You want to get three nail school’s info so that you have some comparison of the program outline and the cost of the course. Since you know the number of hours required for your license you can tell whether they are covering more or less then is necessary. Once you have those prices i would also compare them to the price of your local community college to see whether their is a huge price difference or not.

If you live in the UK or most other areas out of the US, you most likely have a much wider range of options for getting licensed. You can check out nail courses online or other home based nail courses as well, and the cost difference can be quite different for in class training.

The Payoff for Nail Technician Courses

On average, according to Payscale.com nail technicians can make anywhere from $27,000 to $36,000 a year, depending on the services offered as well as the hours worked etc. The above salary is assuming approximately 40 hours a week. I have found that in the salon industry, if you are good you can set your own price, and as long as you have clients you can make as much as you want. If you own a salon, you can also earn a percentage of what your employees make as well. Find a popular nail tech at a prestigious salon in your area and have a conversation with them about wanting to get into the nail business, ask them for tips and see if you can work out what they make a session as well as what they make a year.

One of the things to consider about getting a nail technician license or additional nail training is the ability to work for ones self as well as work as an employee. If you want to work for a salon, there are many salon’s that will take you as an employee and take care of your taxes, your hourly rate and whatever benefits you negotiate. There are also many other salon’s that will only rent you space and allow you to work as an independent contractor. When you work in this way, you have the ability to set up a business as a sole proprietor, or any other business entity. When you operate as a business instead of an employee you have many legal tax benefits available to you that many employees do not have access to. Make sure to hunt down some information online and set up a meeting with a CPA to verify your findings or ask any questions you haven’t been able to find answers for.

Choose Your Own Adventure

The numbers above should help you decide whether or not to take your nail training and get licensed or not. If you are already a working nail technician, hopefully this information will help you decide whether the nail training you are planning to get will be worth your time and money.

If you have a career plan for yourself, using this information will be a lot easier. Do you want to be a nail tech and work in a great salon? do you want to own your own nail salon? do you want to become a nail trainer yourself? do you want to open a nail school? How much nail training you need will be absolutely dependent on where you want to go. for some of the above cases you won’t need anymore nail tech courses then you have already taken, for some you may need a great deal more.

That’s all for today. I hope that this information helps you answer the questions that you may have had about whether nail technician courses are worth it or not.

Till next time…

You receive education and training to better your future. Once you get a certificate, a degree or a diploma from an education series or nail tech school, the last thing you want to hear is that you didn’t get the right nail training. You always want to make sure that you spent your time and money in the right place to help you reach all of your current goals, and hopefully many of your future, unforeseen goals as well.

When it comes to making sure that your nail training will take you as far as you need, you want to make sure that the education you are receiving for your nail technology license covers all the standard material that you will need so that you can work as a nail technician where you are planning on working. This mean that you should take your nail training in the area, or from the area as is the case with online classes, that you plan on working. I once knew a girl who had to take a second basic nail tech training course so that she could get an ITEC accredited license, because she wanted to work as a nail tech giving manicures and pedicures on a cruise ship and her license did not cover her work on the water. So, make sure that while you are taking your nail tech courses, all your bases are covered and that you get the highest quality and fullest nail technician training you can.

Study Well To Pass Your Nail Tech Course Exam

If you are currently taking a nail technician course at your local community college, or at a beauty school or salon, you want to make sure that you finish that course before anything else and make sure to pass your nail tech exams with flying colors. It would be silly to change your course now after you have already started getting your foundation of nail training and education. You can always add nail training courses later into your own curriculum, or take them after you have received your certification. The more you can learn at this stage, the better, so make sure to study any resources you can get your hands on, and practice, practice, practice. In a previous post I talked a little bit about how you should prepare for your nail training exams, so make sure to check that out.

If you are looking for resources to study beyond whatever materials were provided for you, check out the nail technician exam secrets first. There are also plenty of other resources in there. What resources do you all like to use?

Take Master Nail Training to Increase your Skills

If you are already a licensed nail technician that is working in the field currently, or looking to get back to your nail career and need a little refresher, it is always a great idea to take a home study or short course to brush up on and improve your current skills. With the short courses, it is also always very beneficial to meet others in your profession in your area.

Some of you need to get continuing education units for your nail training, to keep your license current, and some of you are looking to increase your income and your service by mastering new skills and learning more about how top nail technicians perform. If this is you, you should try a master nail tech course or talking with our salon owner about what extra trainings they may need to provide for you.

Become a True Nail Artist

Some of you may have a more exotic clientele or may just really enjoy the more creative side of the nail business, and for you all i would suggest learning as much as you can about nail art. I have seen some really amazing nails out there, and many of them are some of the most creative works of art on tiny little canvases. Nail artistry is really a growing field, and its FUN! if you haven’t had a chance to check out a really cool nail art class or haven’t seen anybody do some cool stuff on youtube, you should go poke around and see what some of these creative individuals are doing. Whether its just using varnish, or using acrylic or gel nails, there is a lot that you can do with your brushes and a little creativity that you haven’t even thought of yet.

Acrylic and gel nail training are the basic building blocks of nail art, but there are many more specific training techniques and process techniques that you will want to pick up from a teacher or whoever you choose to be your nail art guru. One other to get good with gel or acrylic nail art besides taking a gel nail training course would be to find a local nail competition, attend, and talk to some of the champs. Better yet, you can even compete yourself!

If you are a nail hobbyist or a nail technician with a creative flair that you don’t always get to express, then i highly recommend you check out a short nail art course in your area or trying out some of the home based nail art training courses from essential nails, i have heard some really good reviews about them although i haven’t tried them myself.

Know What You Want Out of Your Nail Career

I think with any career, you should always set lofty goals and go for them with vigor while taking massive action. Learn as much as you can, set yourself up to move forward as best you can with what you have to get yourself rolling in the direction you want to go, and you will always do well in your chosen field.

In the salon business, i think this starts with becoming a master nail technician, becoming the best in your area. Another common goal is to own the salon you work in, build a business, and own your own shop, or nails training center. Many nail technicians, have moved on and up into owning their own nail shop, or opening a nail school, which has given them the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of anther’s labor.

Whether you see yourself in an owner position, or a brilliant nail artist’s position, you can always benefit from learning more about the business end of the field you are in.

If you really want to learn to build your customer base as a nail technician, you need to learn about marketing for yourself. This can be as simple as asking your customers to refer you to their friends, and can be as advanced or as complicated as you want, but at the end of the day the principles of marketing yourself and your services have very few variations, and you will learn these in time. If you are looking to learn about how to market yourself as a nail technician in your area, or you are looking to keep your clients coming back happy, then there are many resources available to you.

This course has a few marketing secrets of successful nail technicians that may be useful. Another resource that is focused highly on customer retention and customer rapport is Nail Salon Success. This course focuses on relating to your customers in a beneficial way. After you have improved your nail art skills, and your treatment, getting more people in the door and into your chair is always going to be a top priority, so even if the course above is not for you, make sure to pick up a book about about marketing a small business and learn about customer acquisition and retention, the value will last you a lifetime, and help you really stretch your nail training far.

Whether you are told that you need to go take a course that will give you a nail technician ceu or not, it is important to consider the many benefits that you will receive from getting nail training for continuing education units.

Reason 1 it’s Required To Stay Licensed

First, it is not required everywhere to take continuing education units to stay licensed. Florida is one state that requires license renewals and 16 units of continuing education in approved nail technician courses. You should check with your local guild or board of cosmetology to find out about license renewals and continuing education. It is usually not a yearly renewal, so if you are new to the nail tech ranks, you may not have to worry about it for a bit. Ask any of the more experienced nail techs you may work with as well, because they will know for sure.

Continuing Education Units Make You Better

Ok, maybe they won’t make you better automatically, but having a habit of growing and learning in your field of choice in neccessary for any professional to take your career higher and farther. Nail technicians and Nail Artists are no exception to this rule. If you don’t need to take nail technician ceu courses, or courses that offer you continuing education units, then look at a few different nail art courses, or consider taking reflexology, and build it in to a pedicure appointment. You can also consider taking courses for salon management if you are looking to not only be your own boss, but have others work for you. Nail technician CEUs are great for getting back to basics and analysing your technique and your procedure. having that beginners mind will bring you to a place where you are ready to learn and build on the great techniques you already have. If you learn one thing in the course, then you know it has been worth it.

Make Sure The Credits Transfer

make sure that the courses you take will allow you to continue on with other schools if you have your heart set on a few different nail art classes. On a couple forums i read about different nail tech schools in England not honoring other schools base credits as prerequisites for their advanced courses even though the courses outlines are very similar in nature. This could be a quality control issue or it could just be two competing schools trying to squash their competition, but either way it is something you, as a growing nail technician, need to be aware of.

Till Next time…

If you are thinking about taking nail technician courses
then you are most likely looking for a way to increase your income
level and career opportunities without having to commit yourself to 4
years at a University when you may not even like the subject you are
studying. There are many other alternatives to college or community
college and trade schools are by far one of the best alternatives for
most people who are looking to make more money in a given career. Most
likely you interest in beauty and fashion (nail especially) has brought
you here to learn a little bit more about what it takes to become a
nail tech.

How Many Hours Till I Become A Certified Nail Technician?

This is one of the first questions that people ask when they are exploring different types of nail training.
The number of hours required changes from state to state and Country to
Country. In Arizona it currently takes 500 hours of combined schooling
and training before a training nail tech can take their theoretical and
practical examinations to become licensed by the Arizona Board of
Cosmetology. To become a registered California Manicurist and obtain
your license you must attend a registered nail technician school for
400 hours. In Nevada you have to spend 500 hours to receive your
manicurist license. In Utah you have to spend only 300 hours to
receive your nail technician license. many states will also require
you to take continuing education units to keep your license up to
date. If you live outside of the United States, the U.K. for example,
you could take your courses from your home computer and receive your
nail technician license from home. If you lived in Brighton, England
for example you could take a course from essential nails and in about 80 hours recieve a license to apply acrylic nails to clients.

Is the Coursework Worth the Time?

As with any trade you are thinking about getting schooling for, you
want to make sure that you can make enough money to support yourself
and to justify the education that you are about to receive. Most nail
technicians can charge between $25 to $50 for a manicure and upwards of
$70 for a great set of acrylics or fiberglass nails. In the united
kingdom 30 to 40 pounds for a set of nails is also a very reasonable
price point. Since a manicure or a set of nails can usually be done in
round about an hour i think that is a pretty good return on an
investment in your nail technician education.

What do you think about nail technician courses that you have taken? are you thinking about taking any? where are you located? I’d love to know what you’re planning.

Till Next Time…
